Molivos or Mithymna

Molivos, in the north of Lesvos island, known in ancient times as Mithymna, is one of the oldest and most historic settlements in Lesvos Greece. The history of Mithymna goes back to antiquity and continues through the Byzantine era, the Genoese rule, the Ottoman period, and modern Greek history. Today, Molivos is one of the best preserved traditional villages in Greece and one of the most important travel destinations in the North Aegean.

Ancient Mithymna

Mithymna was one of the most powerful cities of ancient Lesvos and often rivaled Mytilene in influence and strength. According to tradition, the city was named after Mithymna, daughter of King Makareus. Its location in northern Lesvos, close to the coast of Asia Minor, made it an important naval and commercial center.

During antiquity, Mithymna developed strong cultural and economic activity. The city was known for its wine production, trade, and maritime power, and its fortified walls protected the settlement from invasions. Remains of the ancient acropolis can still be found on the hill where the Molivos castle stands today.

Molivos Castle

The most characteristic landmark of Molivos is the impressive Molivos Castle, built on the ruins of the ancient acropolis. The castle took its present form mainly during the Byzantine and Genoese periods.

During the Middle Ages, Lesvos came under the rule of the Genoese Gattilusi family, who strengthened the fortifications of Mithymna and used the castle as an important defensive point in the North Aegean. Later, during the Ottoman period, additional modifications were made, shaping the structure that visitors see today.

Molivos Castle is considered one of the best preserved castles in Greece and one of the most important historical monuments in Lesvos.

The name Molivos and Mithymna

The name Molivos appeared during the Byzantine period and is believed to come from the word “Molyvdion” or “Mont’ d’ olives” or from a later variation of the ancient name. The official name of the town today is Mithymna, but the name Molivos is widely used and is the one most familiar to visitors from Greece and abroad.

Both names are still used today, reflecting the long history of the village and its connection between past and present.

The traditional village of Molivos

Molivos is one of the best preserved traditional villages in Greece. The stone houses, narrow cobbled streets, sea view, and unique architecture create a setting that feels almost unchanged through time. The village is built amphitheatrically, with the castle at the top and the harbor at the bottom, forming one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Aegean Sea.

Because of its historical character and natural beauty, Molivos is one of the most popular places to visit in Lesvos Greece, especially for travelers looking for authentic Greek island atmosphere.

Molivos today

Despite its long history, Molivos is not a museum. It is a living village, with people who live, work, and create here every day. Visitors from all over the world come to Molivos to experience its history, architecture, and peaceful atmosphere.

The story of Mithymna continues today, making Molivos one of the most special places in Lesvos island and one of the most unique traditional villages in Greece.
