Sweet Memories

When the holidays approach, I memories from my childhood filled with honey, cinnamon, almonds, walnuts and syrup come to mind. Grandma took care of everything tirelessly with her unquenchable passion to please all of us, young and old. Spoon sweets, pan sweets, donuts, jams, roasted halva and almonds were necessary for successful celebrations. The house filled with all kinds of aromas and everyone waiting the cue to begin devour all the sweets. All recipes taken from Mikra Asia (eastern Anatolia, Asia Minor, or the modern-day Republic of Turkey) and Molivos, combinations of political, Asia Minor and Aegean cuisine.
The entire island has elevated pastry making into art, a hallmark of Lesbian cuisine. Particular development in this field has been given in recent years by the cooperative spirit of the women of the island, who, being rural women, after creating cooperatives by region, engaged in something creative such as the preparation of traditional spoon and pan sweets, but at the same time jams, full of aroma and divine taste.

If you find yourself in Molivos, don’t forget to try some of the spoon sweets, the platsenda, the round lukumadaki (round doughnut with no hole) with honey and cinnamon and the traditional macaroons that are prepared even at weddings instead of kerastiko (treat)!

Some of the traditional sweets and jams are: orange, lemon, bitter orange, tangerine, lemon, bergamot, walnut, quince, apple, tomato, watermelon, pumpkin, jackfruit. As for the famous baked sweets, baklava, walnut pie, kadaifi, ravani and placeda are in great demand. All sweets are produced with elaborate traditional recipes and in the old handmade way, as taught by grandmothers, to offer the modern consumer unique taste experiences in purity, keeping the reputation they had in the past centuries. Other products of the Lesvos women's cooperatives are liqueurs made from local juices, flower water from water lily leaves, trachanas, hand-shredded pasta, puff pastry, cookies, nuts, the famous almonds, pasteli, etc. As for the honey of Lesvos, it is sufficient to mention that it has been honored with the "GREAT TASTE AWARD". Its main ingredients are 20%-30% thyme, 40% wild flowers, 15% willow and various fruits.
