Winter

My uncle used to say ‘‘whoever loves Molivos, loves it at all times of the year and especially in winter’’. He had spent most of the winters of his life in the place he loved more than anything. He had coped with the hardships, the cold, the rains and the droughts. As a fisherman that he was, he felt on his skin what winter meant in Molivos more than anyone. As a child I remember visiting him a couple of times during the Christmas vacation break and he tried his best to keep me warm between the cold stone walls of the house. He used to dress me in a coat, hat and scarf so that I wouldn't catch a cold. And yet I had never heard him complain about the cold and adverse weather conditions at his job, just as I never heard any hard working person in Molyvos complain about the winter (whether shopkeeper, olive grower, farmer, shepherd, fisherman or garbage collector).

The years passed and my impatience to visit the place I loved instead of diminishing, it grew! For the last decade, visiting twice in the summer or during Easter holidays was not enough. I once visited the place in December and since then Christmas holidays in Molivos were incomparable! Sure, summer is beautiful with the golden evenings, the magic and the carelessness of the holidays but then Molivos is too crowded. In the winter there's only me, my family and all others who share my feelings and my anticipation for the place. Let's say it's almost as if we have it exclusively!

Molivos market decorated at Christmas

In December, the villagers do their best to decorate the entire village from the castle all the way downhill to the picturesque harbour. Christmas decorations and lanterns reflect their light on the cobblestones and give the place a fairytale look. The famous alley in the market has its honour because with its morphology, at night it looks like a cave lightened with Christmas ornaments. Small Christmas bazaars are set up at the entrance of the village along with kiosks that offer hot drinks and street food, while street parties, musical events and theatre performances are organized. Meeting almost all the people of the village at a street Christmas party and get to exchange wishes with everyone fills your heart with warmth! It's the time where the whole village is celebrating the coming of Christmas together!
The rest of the Christmas holidays are spent with different ways: home gatherings with conversation, music, board games and snacks, escapes to different parts of the island, ouzo lunch-breaks on the skala (picturesque port of Molivos), squid fishing, walking on the paths and preparations to welcome the new year. A winter visit to the picturesque village of Agiasos, a picnic near the waterfalls of Vatoussa, a walk in the bustling Ermou street of Mitilene, a pilgrimage to Taxiarchis Monastery in Mandamados and even a walk in the picturesque port of Skala Sikamnia for an ouzo feast, are short and worthwhile escapes.
Several convenience stores remain open. Coffee shops, taverns and bars attract visitors as well as permanent residents, giving life to the winter days and nights in Molivos. Also, several commercial stores offer their products and services at predetermined hours during the holiday season. One can find everything in Molivos, even in the heart of winter!

Snowy Molivos

The more wintry the weather, the more fascinating Molivos becomes and its stones turn into one with the sky and the restless sea. Sunny days remind you of the past summers and prepare you for the ones to come! Molivos stands tall and magisterial, gazing at the Aegean, through all seasons of the year and promises its visitors unique moments and experiences!!!
